Queen Mary 2 – Dry-dock & Re-fit
Period: 23-10-2023 to 12-11-2023
LOCATION: Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam
After managing several large coating scopes on behalf of Damen Shiprepair in their various shipyards in the region, CLOCSS was again awarded with a very challenging project, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2!
In a 3-week period, the complete underwater hull needed to be refurbished by removing its current coating system to bare metal (by Ultra High-Pressure Water Jetting) and re-install a new low friction antifouling system.
Also, the hull above waterline needed repairs to the corroded areas (by mechanical preparation) and a fresh coat of polyurethane topcoat. Wheelhouse and parts of the superstructure were to be re-painted, as well as the funnels and areas around them.
Some areas were that difficult to reach, that these needed to be accessed by Rope Access painters.
In the meantime, the vessel’s crew were repainting all balconies, and a large number of contractors (1.700+ workers) were working on the interiors. For example, complete swimming pool refurbishment, kilometers of carpet renewal, furniture replacement and repairs, renewal of all matrasses, cabin refurbishment, teak deck repairs, lifeboat overhauling and many jobs in the engine rooms to make sure the vessel’s propulsion system is up to specification and meets latest requirements.

Our tasks:
-
- Observe safety issues (if any) and report them directly to HSE.
- Be the yard’s liaison to the vessel’s re-fit team.
- Managing all coating related inspections together with the Quality Inspectors from Cunard and coating manufacturer such as;
- Surface preparation as per specified standard.
- Climatic conditions within specification for coating application.
- Monitor coating applications with various application techniques.
- Monitor overcoating intervals in between coats.
- Report and follow up on non-conformities (if any).
- Attend daily progress meetings and, in close cooperation with Damen Project Managers and Cunard’s re-fit team, address issues and directly come up with solutions.
- Managing the yard’s subcontractor by making sure enough equipment and resources are in place to meet the undocking date and timely escalate any issues that cannot be solved on the job to Damen Project Managers.
- QC documentation
- Assisting Damen’s Project Managers in every way possible so scaffolding can be removed, equipment to be mobilized or de-mobilized etc., SIMOPS to be evaluated, work permits and more.
Thanks to the joint efforts of all the professionals in the various lines of work, this was another unique experience and, despite the huge time pressure, the scheduled undocking date was met and Queen Mary 2 will be a great place for the guests for years to come!
Special thanks to Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam for trusting us again with their projects and we are looking forward to the next projects that have already been assigned to us.
