Renovation IJsselbruggen A12
Period 2022- 2026
Rijkswaterstaat, the executive agency of the Dutch Ministery of Infastructure and Watermanagement is currently reinforcing and renovating the bridges over the river IJssel, located in eastern part The Netherlands close to Arnhem and the German border. This bridge is part of the highway A12, an important logistic backbone that connects The Netherlands and Germany.
Since November 2021 CLOCSS is contracted by IJsselbruggen, a combination of Hollandia Services and Dura Vermeer, to be integrated in their project team. Since than we are actively involved in converting the Ministry’s requirements into a workable procedure to execute this complex scope of work.
Together with Savera’s highly skilled project team, well known and knowledgeable coating contractor IRIS Industry Solutions NV and the pro-active team of advisors from Rijkswaterstaat the scope is now well defined, and the project is progressing as scheduled.
- Project preparation by doing research and tests to determine the best and most efficient methods for this renovation.
- Surface to be prepared to carry out welding activities in the zones that require reinforcement and/or renovation.
- This means these areas will need to be abrasive blasted to remove the existing Hexavalent Chromium (Chromium 6) containing coating in a responsible and controlled way.
- All activities will be carried out in a contained and controlled environment and will have no environmental impact on the local infrastructure (mostly farmland and riverbanks)
- After steelworks have been completed, the surface will be re-blasted to make sure the selected coating system will meet the lifetime expectancy as set out by Rijkswaterstaat.
- Application of the coating system will be carried out in a controlled containment where climatic conditions are being managed to meet the requirements as set out in the application procedure and coating manufacturer’s recommendations.
- After curing the adhesion of the applied coating system is tested to assure it is applied according to specification.
- After application the containment and scaffolding are removed while the risk of pollution is being managed by carefully cleaning the coated surface from particles that may have landed there during the removal of tent and/or scaffolding.
- Surface released after final inspection and documentation as agreed to be issued.
- Assisting project management, work preparation and QA/QC department by being actively involved in setting up procedures and reviewing coating contractor’s documentation.
- Attend progress and quality meetings to provide technical input, evaluate the ongoing process and advise where improvements can be implemented.
- Active involvement in project planning and advise how possible delays can be avoided.
- Setting up Inspection & Test Plan (ITP). Defining the inspection points and acceptance criteria together with all parties involved.
- Notifying all involved parties when inspections will take place by issuing Notifications for Inspection (NFI).
- Carry out ITP inspections, together with coating contractor, coating manufacturer and Rijkswaterstaat and report the results of the inspections. These inspections contain:
- Inspection after blasting
- Surface Cleanliness (ISO 8501-1)
- Surface Roughness (ISO 8503-6)
- Soluble Salt Content (ISO 8502-6&9)
- Dust test (ISO 8502-3)
- Climatic conditions (ISO 8502-4)
- Inspection after each coat
- Dry film thickness (ISO 19840)
- Adhesion (ISO 4624)
- Inspection after blasting
- For parts that will be newly constructed, vendors and contractors to be monitored and make sure the project requirements are known to them. This involves inspections on:
- Parts with Thermal Sprayed Zinc Aluminum (EN 1090-2:2019)
- Parts Hot Dip Galvanizing (ISO 1461)
- Inspection reports to be made and filed as contractually agreed.
- Review of (final) documentation issued by coating contractor.
- Point of contact for all coating related matters and/or issues.
- Follow up on non-conformities and minimize delays as much as possible due to this.
