AEOLUS 2.0 – Van Oord (On behalf of Damen Shipyards)

CLOCSS was involved in this project on behalf of Damen Shipyards. Damen was responsible for the construction of deck sections, sponsoons and other structural changes made during this conversion.

Our task was to ensure the corrosion protection scope was carried out according to Van Oord’s requirements. For this project it was an extensive scope of work with the following responsibilities;

  • Creating Coating Inspection & Test Plans (ITP’s) for various scopes.
  • Review method statements from (sub)contractors.
  • Review coating documentation issued by (sub)contractors.
  • Carry out inspections according to ITP with the Client, Class, (sub)contractor and paint supplier.
  • Sign off coating inspection reports on behalf of Damen Shipyards.
  • Advise Project Manager on progress and most cost-effective way forward
  • Issue Coating Technical File (CTF) for all dedicated seawater ballast tanks, to be approved by DNV-GL (Classification Society). This for both newly created tanks and existing ones.
  • Review final documentation and sign off for approval before handing over to the Owners.

AEOLUS 2.0

The modification of the top-class vessel has resulted in increased loading capacity, accommodation capacity and a helicopter deck. Van Oord decided to upgrade the Aeolus to ensure that the vessel remains competitive in a rapidly changing market. The Aeolus was fit for duty as from late spring 2018.

A major step was taken in the modification of Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel.

The new 1,600 tonnes crane was successfully installed onboard, making the vessel ready to handle the latest generation of foundations and turbines for offshore wind projects. The crane, designed and built by Huisman, was installed by Heerema’s Thialf.

The leg encircling crane is built around the portside aft jack-up leg and the boom is stored around the forward leg, saving valuable deck space. The new crane can lift almost twice as much as the Aeolus’ previous crane.
